A Romantic Bar Harbor Honeymoon to Begin Your Forever

There are honeymoons, and then there are honeymoons that mark the beginning of a tradition. A Bar Harbor honeymoon is not about bucket-list adventures or hurried sightseeing. It’s about salt air and slow mornings. Sunrise over Frenchman Bay. Lingering dinners over a bottle of wine. It’s about choosing a place that feels both extraordinary and grounding — a destination that allows you to celebrate in style while still feeling entirely yourselves.

For couples seeking a romantic Maine vacation, few places offer the balance of elegance and authenticity found on Mount Desert Island. Maine honeymoon destinations are defined by dramatic shorelines, forested mountains, the freshest seafood, and a luxuriously slow pace. Of all the romantic getaways in Maine, we love Bar Harbor best. With Acadia National Park at its side, Bar Harbor brings together ocean views, world-class dining, and timeless New England charm. By choosing a Bar Harbor honeymoon, you make space for conversation, space to explore, and space to begin your marriage.

Stay at One of the Most Romantic Hotels in Maine

Your honeymoon deserves a setting that feels special the moment you arrive. The Bar Harbor Inn is an iconic waterfront hotel located in the heart of downtown Bar Harbor with eight beautifully landscaped acres and views of Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands. Dating back to 1887, the Inn exudes historic grace with thoughtful modern updates. The four post beds, luscious textiles, and formal gardens make it easy to imagine oneself as a visiting socialite from the turn of the century, yet nothing feels overdone. Choose from ocean view rooms or luxury suites with private balconies overlooking Frenchman Bay.

Guests of the Bar Harbor Inn can enjoy an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, jacuzzies, and a poolside bar where you and your beloved can relax and watch boats glide across the bay. The hotel also features an onsite spa and three restaurants, including the iconic Reading Room.

The Bar Harbor Inn manages to feel elevated yet entirely at ease and always welcoming. What better place to celebrate the start of a new chapter with your loved one?

A Mount Desert Island Honeymoon Itinerary

We’re in favor of a honeymoon that’s less about how much you see and more about how intentionally you experience it. The average honeymoon is 7-10 days, plenty of time for equal parts adventuring and relaxation around the island. Or opt for a romantic mini-moon, just don’t forget to slow down and enjoy together more than anything else. Here are some of our favorite Maine honeymoon ideas that you can arrange however best suits you.

  • Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain
  • Couples Massage at The Spa
  • Romantic Dining
  • Secluded Swimming & Hidden Beaches
  • Sunset Sail or Private Boat Charter
  • Scenic Flight Over Acadia

Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain

Begin one morning before the world wakes. Drive or hike to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and watch as the first light spills across the Atlantic. Bring a blanket, a thermos of hot coffee or tea, and perhaps some paper and pens. As dawn arrives, write some intentions for the beginning of this next chapter together. The best part? You could go right back to your bed at the Inn afterwards.

Couples Massage at The Spa

After months of planning and celebration, few experiences feel more restorative than a shared spa treatment. The Spa at Bar Harbor Inn offers a luxurious couples massages package with a milk bath, chilled champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and 60-minutes of tandem Swedish massage. Add a facial, pedicure, or session in the sauna to up the relaxation. Just steps away from the Bar Harbor Inn’s pool, exit The Spa to continue savoring the rare pleasure of having nowhere to be and nothing to do. Make sure to book your Spa experience well in advance.

Romantic Dining in Bar Harbor

Evenings in Bar Harbor are made for long dinners. Here are some of our favorite spots for a romantic meal.

The Reading Room: Want to get a little dressed up and experience fine dining? Request a window table at booking for excellent views of the water and enjoy live piano while you eat. The menu is full of seasonal dishes with local ingredients prepared with the utmost care. Start with oysters, end with the famous blueberry pie, and savor everything in between.

Havana: Head into downtown for dinner at this sophisticated Latin American restaurant. They have one of the best wine lists in town and the atmosphere is chic but fun. Their seafood paella is perfect for sharing and if you let waitstaff know, you might find your dessert with a little nuptial congratulations.

Isleford Dock Restaurant: Ready for a truly Maine adventure? Hop on the Beal and Bunker Mail Boat to be whisked out to Little Cranberry Island, where the Isleford Dock Restaurant sits waiting at the town landing. Inside is a gallery of local art, simple but mouthwatering food, and the best service you could ask for.

Room Service: Is it just us, or is a night in the most luxurious dining experience of them all? You can still get the same delicious food from the Reading Room delivered straight to your hotel door. Keep your robes on, set out some candles, pick a movie, and enjoy dinner in total privacy.

Secluded Swimming & Hidden Beaches

While Acadia’s iconic landmarks draw visitors from around the world, quieter corners await couples seeking solitude. Head off the beaten path to Lake Wood off Crooked Road in the northern corner of Acadia National Park. This half mile long pond is said to have some of the warmest waters in all of MDI and while you may find a few locals swimming as well, it’s far less crowded than Sand Beach or Seal Harbor Beach. Bring a picnic and a good book. Stay longer than planned.

Sunset Sail or Private Boat Charter

Few experiences rival watching the sun go down over Frenchman Bay from the deck of a traditional windjammer. Sail along the coastline aboard the Margaret Todd, spotting lighthouses, mountains, and historic homes while accompanied by live folk music. Wine and beer are available for purchase on the boat and trips last between 60 and 120 minutes depending on the season. Downeast Windjammer also offers a variety of private charters if you’d like to make the experience even more intimate. Conveniently, tours leave right from the docks on the Bar Harbor Inn’s property, so you won’t have to fight for downtown parking.

Scenic Flight Over Acadia

Want to add a little thrill to your Bar Harbor honeymoon? Book a private plane tour aboard a Cessna-172 to view Acadia, the Schoodic Peninsula, and MDI’s lighthouses from the air. We especially love this adventure if your honeymoon is planned for the fall when foliage on the island bursts with color.

Make it a Tradition

Perhaps the most romantic Maine getaway of all is this: anticipating the return. Return for your first anniversary, your fifth, and decades from now to sit on the same bench along the shore path, looking out over the water. The Bar Harbor Inn has long been a place where families gather and traditions are born. Many couples who marry here return year after year, weaving this little slice of Maine into their love story. Use your Bar Harbor honeymoon as the beginning of a commitment to slow down and connect deeply, years into your marriage.
